I had one installed in a 24 fret guitar in the neck position which was wired in parallel. I found it too bright that way so I added a small capacitor to ground. Volume and tone pots were 500k each.

The Pickup Place / Re: Trying to wire my Dimarzio Humbucker.
« on: October 23, 2015, 03:57:50 AM »
Hi Alphonse,

Congratulations to your successful wiring experience!

The pickup's bare wire is connected to the base plate and gets soldered to ground. The reason for this is that it works as a shield against radio frequency interference and other noise. But as you noticed the guitar will also work with it disconnected.

The wire coming from the back of the springs also goes to ground - it grounds the strings. Have you ever noticed that when you do not touch the guitar and then touch the strings the background noise goes down? This is because when you touch the strings you are grounded and act as shield against noise.

Sure - if your guitar body is routed for a humbucker in the bridge position.

As to the wiring - I am not quite sure whether you want to replace the existing bridge single coil with the humbucker or whether you only want the humbucker alone. In that case you would not need the 5-way switch.

If you want to replace the existing bridge pickup with the humbucker the red wire would have to go to the switch terminal where the old bridge pickup was connected to, black and white are soldered together and not connected to anything (best to tape the connection to make sure it does not accidentally touch anything), and green goes to ground (can be the back of the volume pot).

If you only use the new bridge pickup with a volume control the red wire goes to the volume control input instead of going to the switch. Everything else is wired as described before.

Good luck,
Stephan

I also know one supplier in my home country who used to do it. It was missing in the last package but to be honest I do not really miss it.

I would consider the Breed neck.

500k audio with the coils in series, add a 470k resistor to ground in split mode to approximate a 250k load.

Cheers Stephan
Thanks for the reply. If I'm just going to run it in series or parallel, do you feel the 500k would be fine or would you still want to add the resistor to the circuit.

Speaking of which how exactly is the resistor in the circuit?

I would also use the resistor for the parallel mode.

If you use a push-pull pot you can solder the resistor across the two middle lugs. In series mode these two lugs are connected so the resistor is effectively not in the circuit. In parallel mode the resistor connects hot to ground thereby making the pickup "see" a pot load close to 240k.

Agree with that combination for the styles you quoted.

Indeed the variance is small and could relate to things which are beyond reasonable control of the manufacturer, such as the wire thickness in a given spool of wire which can vary. The larger the production run the more difficult it gets to control these things.

It certainly does not hurt to try lower output preamp tubes, especially the 12DW7 came to my mind as well. The 5751 would also be a good candidate.

It looks like an old Di Marzio PAF. If I remember correctly they made only one model of these at that time so it can be used as neck or bridge pickup.

While I had the amp apart, I noticed that the filter caps are 100uf.  This explains the stiffness of the amp. 50uf filter caps are on the list of things to try now.

Are you saying 100uf also for the preamps? Way too much IMHO. For the preamp 20-22 uf is sufficient. I don't mind 100uf on the power tube plates and screens but 50uf mostly works.

Green CH vs MetroAmp JTM45- Should not have done this.  The DSL Green ch sounded like a transistor radio compared to the JTM45 run clean.

The JTM45 is one of my favorite clean tones - hard to beat.

R
ed Ch vs Silver Jubilee 50/25 watt. I expected this. The Jub completely destroyed the DSL's gain channel. The Jubilee gain channel just sings and is so 3d and dynamic. The Jubilee has not near the hiss and buzz when its not playing a note either. The DSL red Ch is real noisy.

It is long ago that I had a Jubilee (the 50W top). I should have kept it. It sounded really nice and was not as loud as the regular 50W Marshalls are.

Cool stuff - and yes, the way you describe it modding both channels seems obvious.

Good luck with the project,

The Pickup Place / Re: Best strat for middle position with Evolutions
« on: October 06, 2015, 12:25:18 PM »
If you want the full Evolution set then the ISCV 2 is the obvious choice for the middle position. But other options would work as well but it really depends on what you want to achieve with this guitar. Say you want to solo often with the middle pickup with an overdriven or distorted amp tone, a humcancelling or rail pickup would be good. On the other hand, if you only use the middle pickup in connection with either of the humbuckers split, then a traditional single coil could be the better option.

And your English is fine. I wish I could write in Portuguese half as good.

The Pickup Place / Re: 5 way for Direct Mounting?
« on: October 06, 2015, 12:20:47 PM »
All of the regular switches work also direct mounted. It is just a matter of choosing long enough screws and/or route the slot or cavity for the switch deep enough.
