The Pickup Place / Re: Wiring Anomoly - HSH

1. Confirm the color codes of all pickups in use.

2. Double check your wiring. Then triple check it.

The Pickup Place / Re: Actual Dimarzio Humbucker closest to T-TOP specs
« on: December 25, 2019, 09:31:00 AM »
Hi guys. is there today a Dimarzio Humbucker closest to Gibson T-TOPs?
Guys at Dimarzio said that Air Classic would be the closest, but I'm not sure because of their specs.

In case it doesn't exist, you have a suggestion for humbuckers for LP to obtain U2 sounds?

If you want a T Top, track one down.

Nothing on the DiMarzio menu stands out as being close enough to a T Top to seriously consider. If you contacted DiMarzio tech support and they said to try the Air Classic, give it a go if that’s up your alley. If you contacted sales, I’d encourage you to be certain by contacting tech support....based on my own experiences.

There are many clones that you can find via Google.

Manlius Pickups actually makes something they call a TTop Clone. You can also ask a builder like Brandonwound. The Duncan Angus Young model (aka High Voltage) is in there around a PAT and TTop sort of vibe. The BKP PG Blues is a contender, if you’re ok with the OOP in the middle position...but the BKP Stormy Monday might be something to look at, which is not as soft as some people suggest... the BKP Riff Raff might also be an option.

Hi DarthPhineas,

In regards to DiMarzio single coils, why doesn’t DiMarzio use eyelets in their bobbins, like Fender and Duncan.  They wire the lead wires inside  the coil like a humbucker.  It seems the eyelets would be more durable and easier to repair the leads.  I’m not sure what DiMarzio does to reinforce the lead wires in the coil.  I’ve never pulled off the tape on the FS1.  Maybe you can discuss this further.  TY!!!

Hey BJ

Call in to DMZ during business hours and ask for Eric in tech support.  Or email him via the “tech support” email link on the DiMarzio site.

The Pickup Place / Re: Dimarzio Illuminator Bridge Alternative
« on: December 12, 2019, 04:57:53 AM »
I've had the Illuminator set in my PRS SE Floyd Custom 24 for a few years now. Good for the most part, but want to try a different bridge pup. The main thing I don't like: the notched mids, cocked wah, upper mid spike, vocal "aww" sound, however you want to describe it, but you get the idea. Many Dimarzio pickups have this, as does the Seymour Duncan JB. Something that de-emphasizes that kind of thing, with a bit sweeter cleans, but still good with higher gain. Think Dream Theater level gain, and similar musical endeavors (at most), but also good for classic rock and hair metal. Still fairly open and detailed for chords, with good note separation. NOT dark and overly midrangey, but still possessing good crunch. Clear highs that are open, without being spikey. Finally, something that splits well, without a huge volume drop (some drop is to be expected).

I strongly considered the Seymour Duncan Pegasus before getting the Illuminator (I plan on keeping the neck pup, happy with it). I have Wolfetones in my Les Paul (MK II bridge, Dr. Vintage neck), and couldn't be happier, with the pickups or Wolfe. I consider him a friend, and he suggested his Timbre Wolf. I know how he works with his customers to make them happy, so no worries there, but would still like some other opinions. For what I've described, has anyone tried the Timbre Wolf or Pegasus, and what are your thoughts? Any other suggestions? I will confess that I hope to get something from Wolfe that fits the bill. Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays.

A few options there, based on what you’re laying out.

One is to try the Sonic Ecstasy, which is a slightly more polite Illuminator. Another is to look at your cab/speakers. Another is to tweak the amp EQ or to add an EQ to your pedal board or your rack.

Yes, in the strictest of technical terms there is a difference. However......

Difference is insignificant.

More of a marketing trick pups companies use to play on the OCD nature of most guitar players.

My solution was the Duncan Seth Lover.

A BKP Mule would also do the trick.

That MCP is essentially a Duncan JB clone.

The Warpig can be all over the place in as much as the “bolt” screw will be one way and the normal screws will be a very different way. BKP likes to suggest their bolts and normal screws are chosen to sound the same. They are wrong.

PRS Tremonti is basically a Gibson 500T clone. It’s a good pup. If you have one, keep it. If not, find an older 500T, which have more character and are more musical than the current ones.

Just went through many different sets to pair up to an ash body strat with a maple neck. If you want to keep it in the DiMarzio realm, consider the AT1. For more aggressive than that, consider the Dominion.

For BKP, look at the Nailbomb.

I read the reviews darth. But they say thst all 3 bridge pickups are great without comparing them.

As a general rule, I prefer to avoid “shootouts”. There really is no better or worse, but what works for the players needs. In all fairness, anyone is welcome to do what I’ve already done and throw down the cash to try them all.

The Satchur8 isn’t as dark as numbers on a webpage might suggest. It is, however, ballsier than the other Satch options. But chasing specs will never reveal as much as installing the pups and trying them out. Nobody said playing guitar is a cheap hobby.

The Pickup Place / Re: Mojotone PW Hornet bridge...
« on: November 21, 2019, 03:42:14 PM »
First off, thanks for the reference.

When Mojo first suggested the Hornet set, I was a little curious as it is a signature model and I knew nothing of the artist or the band. What I did google about the band had me expecting a garden variety narrowly-focused result. However...the Hornet set is super versatile and very surprising. I still remember that it wanted me to not put the guitar down.

Super cool to hear that you are liking it.

pu that would knock out the Duncan 59 as my favorite neck 'bucker. I like the kind of noodly soloing tone with an almost single foolish vibe it does in the neck. Any suggestions?

Another option, for those who like something outside the traditional humbucker realm, is the PW Hornet set from Monotone.  They're incredibly musical and have versatility in spades.

Been a fan of the Mojotone hornet set. Like you said, very versatile. Nicely voiced and a most capable humbucker set.

There is nothing significant about the pups that Grover makes. The ones he makes for himself are so bland that Dave got Input from a guy from another pup company to get suggestions to feed to Grover so he wouldn’t have to use Grovers stock pups.

Even then, you can hear in interviews that he looks at pups with the same lack of personality as someone might pick out strap buttons. They are wire wrapped around a bobbin, in his own words.

Please don’t waste your time chasing something so bland.

So Darth i believe has tried both the combos of choice 2 and 3.   I once tried a duncan alt 8 and it sounded  metallic and klanky.  Had a weird pick attack.  Hope the satchur8 doesnt have that. What is the tonal difference in the sets Darth? I kind of dont like the idea of virtual vintage cause i like spiky mids and highs. But looks on paper the satchur8 is missing some highs.  Is the satchur8 good with crunch and harmonics?

I have all the pups mentioned in the OP. As well as the Alt 8 and other A8 pups.

You can read my thoughts about the OP pups on my site.

A rundown of some of the A8 pups I’ve tried can be found here: http://darthphineas.com/tag/alnico-8/
