The Pickup Place / Re: 6 Screw Z-Mod - anybody tried it?
« on: February 26, 2022, 03:01:24 PM »
The bluesbucker is hum cancelling.  Are you sure you don’t have it wired in coil split?

I think Darkblue’s saying they want to achieve a humcancelling version of the BB’s split sound. Considering it’s essentially a dummy coil design, I’d try the coils in parallel before removing three of the slugs.
Gotcha.  That’s exactly what I did. I have it in the neck of my LP and much prefer the parallel/series setup to coil split.

Yes, now it works - thanks for that.

I tried this mod in a slightly altered way on the following pickups:

- Duncan Full Shred neck (SH-10n): removed the 3 screws on the neck side coil for the 4th, 5th and 6th strings to get single coil like low strings. I kept the screws on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings to keep them fat. This is a trick that RayBarbeeMusic posted here.
- TV Jones Classic neck: same thing as before, with the same result
- DiMarzio DLX Plus neck. removed all screws on the neck side coil. Since this dropped the output too much for me I put them back but screwed them in as far as they would go.

I am considering pulling the slugs on my DiMarzio Bluesbucker as I love the single coil tone it has but hate the hum.

Cheers Stephan

Now that you’ve posted the same thing 20+ times, I think I’ll go ahead and click on your “not at all shady” pornography links.

I haven’t listened to it yet. I’ll give it a listen in the car. It’s got a decent system.
I like Tool but I don’t love them.

Thanks for the answers folks - sorry for the delay - not ungrateful, just busy at work...

Had not considered the heavy blues at all, but am almost sold based on the above - will check it out.

Curious re The Breed suggestion (i didn't know they still made it?) - any reason for that one in particular? I haven't tried it. Have liked Nortons, Air Zones, Mo Joes, but never tried the Vai based pups....

Lastly - re the Kiesel -  this'll be my second - I bought a Vader 2-3 years ago and it pretty much became the only thing I use. It's awesome.  This one is just a variation on a theme. I got the standard single coil and the beryllium humbucker with it.

Happy to post picture of the new one when it gets here. I'd post a pic of my existing Vader if i could remember how to attach images - been a few years since ive been on a forum...
Cool...yeah, I’d love to see your guitars if you are able to get some pics uploaded.

Hello from Australia

I do apologise for joining really just to ask one question - but i haven't been able to find the answer anywhere.

So, I’ve got a Kiesel Aries coming to me soon. Its alder body, maple neck, 24 frets.

I’ve built it as a S-H config - like the Satriani model JS2400.  I used to have one of those guitars and loved the pup sounds - but didn’t get on with the floyd rose….so Im basically building a similar guitar with Kiesel, but with a more vintage style trem.

In any event, i want to add aftermarket pups to it from the outset….and Im basically only used DiMarzios since 1989.

Honestly, most of what I do is just jamming at home on backing tracks these days. I don’t play much rhythm, and don’t need a clean jangly strat rhythm sound. the neck pup will be for soloing mostly. I play blues and rock, sometimes heavy stuff, but never aggressive metal rhythm stuff - just lead with various amounts of gain!

I was thinking of putting the Satch track and Mo Joe combo In there (I did enjoy the sounds from my JS2400) - but am also thinking of a Air Norton S and a Tone Zone (mainly because I had a tone zone in an alder guitar years ago and it sounded awesome.

So I guess I'd appreciate some thoughts on a good S-H combo. Many thanks.
Please consider posting a new guitar day when you get your Aires.
I’ve been gassing hard for a Kiesel. The Aires and the DC600 are both on my short list.

What factory pickups did you go with?

Isn’t the 36th Anny based on Larry’s pickups in his LP?
I’d venture a guess that the 36th is likely the closest to the 59.

So I saw the NAMM info in this guitar and when I finally saw the price, I threw up in my mouth a little. AMS is listing $19000 for what is basically a parts caster shred stick. I thought to myself,”Who in God’s name are they marketing these to?” And then it hit me. The same people that will spend 50gs on a Dumble and brag about it on the gear page.

I saw a review on musicians friend when they released the Frankenstein replicas where a dentist bought one to hang on the wall in his waiting room. Yeah THAT’S not a waste of $25,000.

I wonder if I can cash in on this cow and make a 5150 replica out of my ‘85 Kramer Barretta and charge an astronomical sum for it. Maybe throw in one of those custom shop Duncan’s that Seymour says he wound for Eddie. ::)
I guess if you’ve got the money....
Personally, I don’t. I buy guitars to play them, not to dis-play them.
See what I did there? Lol

The Pickup Place / Re: HSS pickups in a Tele......what pots to use???
« on: July 25, 2019, 04:28:44 PM »
I was going to suggest a 250k pot as well.
Most people prefer the 500k with humbuckers but I’m the exception. I almost always prefer 250k pots. The difference is more subtle than internet lore would have you believe. All it’s going to do is shave a tiny bit of high end off.
And if you don’t like it a 500k pot is an easy install.

I’ve done it to a few guitars now....
It’s pretty easy and since you can already solder....why not, right?
