The Pickup Place / Re: HSS pickups in a Tele......what pots to use???
« on: July 24, 2019, 03:08:55 PM »
You could do the old resistor trick to make the splits and singles see 250k even with a 500k pot (you'll have to ask someone else how to do that, I actually kind of like singles with 500k), or you could pick either a bridge hum that likes 250k (something like the Bluesbucker, Humbucker from Hell, or EJ Special) or singles that like 500k (the VV Heavy Blues 1 and 2, IIRC).

The Pickup Place / Re: Area '61 vs VV '54 Pro neck

The Area's a little brighter and has a bit more of that open strummy vibe, whereas the VV 54 is a little less trebly (I wouldn't say dark, just kinda smokey up top). Other than that, they're not super different pickups, just depends what flavor you want. Either one would be a good pair.

2x Super Distortions, Super D-B and Super 2-N, Super D-B and PAF Pro-N, or 2x PAF Pro. Honorable mentions to 2x Super 2, and any of the PAF Pro combos but with a FRED instead of the 'Pro.

I had some balancing issues with my Kiesel CL6 (HH) and my G&L Legacy (SSS) with a Hot Rails in the bridge and Cool Rails in the neck and middle, and the solution in both cases was literally to just drop everything as low as it would go (down to the pickguard on the G&L, down to the wood on the Kiesel). There's a tonal change, a little less beef and a bit more air, but since you seem kinda down on the tone already it might be worth a shot.

If you want to keep this as a guitar more for rock and metal but have a very "gibsony" sound, the 500T/495R combo are pretty good for that. A decent bit hotter than the ones you've got though.

The Pickup Place / Re: Area 61 vs Cruiser Bridge

Pretty sure his Ibby sig has 500k with a treble bleed and autosplits but nothing fancy. His sound is pretty rounded but defined, so I figure he uses the extra pickup treble to compensate for less treble at the amp.

Yeah the FRED being based on the PAF Pro means it works really well in either or both spots.
If the singles are a little weak, try dropping the humbuckers to match as well as raising the singles. You get a little less power overall, but you can balance things better and compensate by raising the gain on the amp or using some kind of boost.

I'd go with #1 with either a PAF Pro in the neck or just another FRED. I think you might get some output balancing issues and some tonal mismatch with #2, but that's just me. Definitely get 500k pots, I'd actually recommend you swap them out first and then see if you still wanna swap the pickups.

I mean IDK about what y'all saw but they literally had Jimi's face and buzzwords plastered all over the marketing for the Custom Shop Psychedelic pickups. Like the old George Lynch pickups after he went to Arcane, or the '78 with EVH, or the High Voltage set with Angus.
I mean, I don't blame them, they're doing pretty well for themselves and they put out some pretty good product.

Thanks!
What about the output? Is it true that the perceived output is similar?
Electrically, it's pretty similar, but because of the blade design, the Cruiser should give you a little more perceived sustain and output.

The Area 61 is definitely gonna be more traditional. If you want to hear a neck-position Cruiser, Andy Timmons uses a Cruiser bridge in the neck and middle of his AT, and a full Cruiser set (bridge, middle, and neck) in his ATZ.
The Area's probably gonna give you a little less output and a different response (more like a traditional Strat pickup vs. the Cruiser being a little more even and balanced) because of its different construction.

The Pickup Place / Re: Microphonic problem with Satch Track on JS2450

I would personally hot-glue first, then wax, because the hot glue would probably mess with the potting. You might also want to add a wrap of some sort of poofy electrical tape to hold the cover a little more snugly.

Sounds like there's some issue with the potting. I'm like 99% sure the Satch Track is supposed to be potted, and the problems you're having shouldn't be happening.

HTF,
Thanks for the reply.  The Bluesbucker might be headed in the right direction.

The Pre-B1 has a sonic profile of B6 M6.5 T6.5.
The Bluesbucker is B4.5 M5.5 T6 and is the ball park.

I think that the HFH would be too bright looking at the sonic profile.

Have you owned all three of those pups (Pre-B1, HFH, and Bluebucker) to describe your experience?

I haven't gotten a chance to try a Pre-B1, but I messed around on a friend's Bluesbucker-B/HFH-N Tele a while back and it definitely had the Tele-with-more-power thing nailed pretty well. The HFH would be a little bright in the bridge, but if you find the Bluesbucker a little dark for you then it might work out well.

Off the top of my head, maybe a Humbucker from Hell or a Bluesbucker might get you somewhat close without splitting.
