Duncan bobbins always crack, even brand new.  Unusual for the cracks to widen over time though.

To expand, we could have a sticky with a description of each technology (Air, Dual Resonance, VV) then a list of which pickup use which (or none).  That would be a very useful resource.

Always strikes me odd that DiMarzio is well ahead of the curve on pickup design tech, but somehow in people's minds they are a 'basic' pickup.  They were doing some things waaaaay before anyone else thought of them, and other makers started copying, calling it something different, then acting like they invented it when DiMarzio had been doing it for years.

I have a bridge coming next week so I guess I'll find out first hand.

I agree as well.  Can we get a sticky?

I've never understood Breed neck as a neck pickup, waaaaay too dark on the wound strings and not very bright on the high strings.

Makes a GREAT high wind PAF type bridge pickup though.

Finally got them for the first time in a Year on Friday.  They got to answer a year's backlog of questions  ;)

The Pickup Place / Re: The feel and response of air pickups

No concerns.

Air tech doesn't really make them sound like A2.  It does lower the output, and for a given pickup, take the extreme humps out of the response.  Mushy attack?  No sir.

For instance, if you put A2 in a pickup that has the same specs as the 36th bridge, it would be dull sounding with slow attack.  The 36th bridge is neither.  It has very fast tracking of pick attack and it's tight, but it has a lot more midrange than if you stuck A5 in a pickup like that and didn't have the Air tech involved.  See for instance, Duncan Whole Lotta Humbucker, which is bright AF and lacks the vocal mids.

I've used a lot of the air buckers and really like that, and I'm a fast picker so I'm very sensitive to fast attack from a pickup, and generally prefer A5 for that, or at least A4, and really only like A2 in very low winds, 8k or less.  Air Classic, 36th, Air Norton (in bridge), Air Zone, all track quickly and do not have mushy A2 low end.  Like I said, if you compare a regular Norton or Tone Zone to the air version, the air version lowers output and rounds off the big bumps in frequency, and actually makes the lows tighter IMO because there isn't such a massive hump there like there is on the unaired versions.

The Pickup Place / Re: Can the Tone Zone do low gain?

My only concern is having read a couple of replies where the poster thought that the Air Zone took all the great things about the Tone Zone and threw them away.

I'd say the opposite, especially if you want lower gain sound.

Air Zone or AT-1.  Norton has plenty of highs, might not be what you want.

Still cannot reach them and they do not return messages.  Sucks because they used to be very available and a great resource.

Fast Track 1 is hotter than Cruiser Bridge.

For rails, in terms of strattiness and brightness descending order:

Cruiser Neck
Cruiser Bridge
Fast Track 1
Satch Track
Pro Track (I'm not a fan of this one)
Chopper
Air Norton S

The various others are all much hotter and darker than those above.

That reminds me that I have one sitting around that I haven't fully tested.

If you do, let me know what you think.  If you want to get rid of it and it's an F spaced Bridge, let me know!

Anyone tried it?  Can find very little info, some compare it to an Air Zone but I find that a little difficult to believe given specs.

"tone aficionados claiming that it doesn't quite have the singing, rich vintage quality of the more expensive replications. That's true, and that's perhaps why the price is able to be so much lower than those examples."

Hogwash and fart sniffing.

I've owned and played the silly expensive stuff, the 36th keeps up with any and in most guitars sounds better than most of the boutiques.
