The Pickup Place / Re: Which Middle for Breed Neck and Bridge?
« on: June 14, 2015, 10:01:00 PM »
Used to be that way for me with the middle PUP.
Then I followed some advice and installed a Dimarzio HS-2 (you can get one cheap 2nd hand, nobody loves them anymore). Wire it with just the top coil working, and you've got one of the best strat sounds around. Unlike a side-by-side humbucker, when you split a stacked PUP, it increases in output. Mine reads 8.2, plenty hot in that position.

They're A4 magnets according to Dimarzio.

you can't see pickup height in that pic.

Whether it makes "much" difference is a matter of opinion, but body wood certainly makes "a" difference.
However, it would seem the biggest difference you're hearing is coming from the bridge.

The Pickup Place / Re: HSS configuration. what works best for you?

My current combination is AirZone bridge, HS-2 (top Coil only) in middle, and Fast-Track 2 permanently in parallel, in neck.
Almost hum-bucking neck sound, but without the flab. Pristine single-coil in middle, and well, BIG humbucker in bridge. split Airzone+middle= quack for days.

The Pickup Place / Re: AT-1+Cruisers in a Standard (MIM) Strat

That's how I did it, Stephan.
I haven't noticed much loss in highs, and as Ray said, some loss wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Especially as I use the At-1 split quite a lot.

Lowering the At-1 makes it sound brighter, and thinner. I've wired a 1 meg trim-pot to mine (internally). Only requires a tiny turn to balance with the other pups, and very little change in tone.
          cheers, Bill.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: The AT-1

Agreed, A-Bomb, a very singing lead tone, that doesn't cop out as you play higher up the neck.
Another thing worth mentioning: its not a finicky pickup, like the Tonezone, which needs to sit at just the right height to sound its best, I've had the AT-1 extremely close to the strings, as well as quite far from them. While there is a difference in tone, it sounds good regardless.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / The AT-1

I've had one of these things in bridge position for a couple of weeks now. Here's my thoughts so far.
It replaced an Airzone, a VERY hard act to follow. Frankly, I was very happy with it, and surprised I removed it. However, I kept reading posts gushing about how the AT-1 had this extra little thing, this "swirl of harmonics" around each note. The specs on the Dimarzio site are pretty similar for both pickups, so I decided to give it a try.
Please note that I don't play anything much heavier than AC/DC, Gary Moore, stuff like that. I'm primarily interested in clean sound. I play quite a bit of country music. I was a little concerned when I hit that first chord with the AT-1, and realised that one man's "swirl of harmonics" may be another man's "dirt". It was only when I turned the amp up and gigged that I became relieved. No, not dirt, it's character! The Airzone is like the guy everybody likes. Solid, dependable. The At-1 has attitude, you either like it or you don't. I like it a lot. Its more cutting than the Airzone, but in no way brittle. Not QUITE as much bottom end, but still plenty.
As I said, I need some country twang, and let me say, the AT-1 doesn't split anywhere near as well as the Airzone. From what I've read, NOTHING does, the Airzone is superb in that area. When I tried splitting the AT-1, I was very disappointed, I'd been spoiled. In desperation, I tried it in parallel, and bingo! I've never been a big fan of parallel wiring, but it just works with this thing. There have been moments onstage where I've been wailing away, thinking I'm in series mode, and suddenly realised I'm in parallel, there's nothing thin or artificial about it. You can get satisfying country twang out of it, unless you're a died-in-the wool Tele fanatic.
So, at the moment, although the Airzone is not yet for sale, I can say that I'm very satisfied with the AT-1. It covers a lot of ground, and does it with style, and some attitude.     Highly recommended.

The mini bar (off topic & misc) / Re: your first guitar idol?
« on: May 18, 2013, 09:04:23 AM »
One of my very first, maybe my first guitar idol. Django Reinhardt. He was under-rated on electric.....listen to "Night and Day", from his last album, 1953. He was be-bopping with the best of the jazz guys.
On a different tack.........Danny Gatton!

If you want a LOUD and pretty authentic single coil Strat sound, try the Injector bridge wired for just the top coil. Works great in middle position between 2 medium to high output humbuckers.

Air Norton S works for me.

Gotta agree with Mesa, thought the Cruiser neck would do wonders for Strat middle pickup. It's "OK".......but doesn't inspire. I'm now looking for a HS-2.
