The Pickup Place / Re: Question about HSH Pickup combination
« on: September 03, 2021, 12:07:27 PM »
The pickup combo sounds pretty good, the neck and bridge combo has been tried and tested for quite some time. The middle pickup is fine but you really have to ask yourself how often you use it. I used to swap out the middle pickup in all my HSH guitars and then realized 90% of the time I'm either on the neck or the bridge and just now no longer bother swapping out the middle unless I find it atrocious and not something I can work with.

You don't need a RWRP middle but you may have to reverse the wiring on the pickup.

Another option for the neck pickup would be the Bluesbucker but that might just be my personal preference of it over the PAF Pro for me as I like the added clarity.

Should just be labelling for the cover that comes with them.

Bluesbucker with an AT-1 is a fantastic combination! I had it in one of my guitars and loved it!

hi! im trying to convert an HH Ibanez AZ's alter switch to a Push/Push pot, with the same pickup selection capabilties. and replace the pickups with dimarzio Rainmaker and Dreamcatcher pickups. i don't know too much about wiring and such but can anyone help me out with how ill go about achieving this. will i need any different parts and etc. and a diagram will help greatly if can be done.

Swapping the Alter switch to a push/pull shouldn't be difficult it it's a standard SPDT switch (it's only got one set of three connectors). The push-pull pot will have two different sets of connectors. One for the rotary pot itself and a set of connectors on the side for the push-pull. Just match the wiring on the original alter switch to the connectors on the side of the push-pull pot. If you get a push-pull with 6 connectors, just use one side.

As for swapping out the pickups. You can just follow the original wiring but swap the red wire on the DiMarzio where the "hot" wire from the Duncan goes(typically the black wire)

It's a tried and true pickup!

Wow I didn't think it would be *THAT* expensive to get a customized Super Distortion. Was this quoted through DiMarzio directly or through a dealer/distributor in the UK?

Let us know how the Catwhisker pickup works out. It sounds like an interesting configuration that would throw off a bunch of people!

Yeah I'm doing ok. Looking forward to retiring in two years so I can be cool like you!

Thanks for sharing the link to the Mad Hatter stuff! This stuff looks pretty awesome! Which solderless system did you go with?

Oh wow! This is definitely an example of life being stranger than fiction!

I wonder. If you were to swap the Norton's would the things still be the same?

That's a good question. All the people I know that have agents are not in the music industry right now but rather in film/tv or publishing.

Glad to see you've decided to take the proactive approach in getting out of the rat race!

The Pickup Place / Re: Air Zone...Anyone?

Around 20 years ago, Steve Blucher sent me an Air Zone and an Air Norton for my Peavey Wolfgang. (The Wolfgang with the carved maple top) That guitar sounded amazing after I installed those pickups.

I actually really like the arched top Peavey Wolfgang guitars! I wish they were still around.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that the reason people mentioned wood species in conjunction with pickups in this thread was because that is exactly what the person who started the topic asked about...

Possibly. Although different woods do alter the characteristics of the pickup a bit so it's not uncommon to see folks talk wood and pickups together. It's far from the full picture as pedals and amps also affect the final tone.
