The mini bar (off topic & misc) / A fun letter to DiMarzio
« on: November 11, 2013, 04:12:50 PM »
A little while back, while in a sleep depravation induced euphoria, I wrote a letter to the DiMarzio information address gushing about the pickups.  It was a long winded letter, but one I felt the need to send them.  I basically told them that their pickups let me shut off my brain when  I need to be a performer, cooperate with my adventurous artist side, and stay out of my way when I need to be a technician in the studio.

I told them that they keep me from being that guy we all have seen live who is hating his tone and fighting against it and doesn't really get to focus on the show.  We all know who those dissatisfied, prune looking, guitar players in our lives are.  I then told them a quote I have been throwing around since I met you guys on this wonderful forum: "DiMarzio pickups speak for all of the voices in my head."

They replied back clearly having read the email.  It was pretty sweet and reaffirming.

Well, thanks for letting me rant!

Gear Closet / Compression?
« on: August 08, 2009, 11:31:20 AM »
How do you guys feel about it?  I'm looking for that extra sustain but most pedals reem way over the top with the dynamic squashing.  Call me old fashioned but I like the gratification of beating the tar out of my strings and hearing the pick attack.  Anyone care to share their experiences?  Perhaps someone can suggest a more subtle compression pedal or an alterative pedal for sustain.  Also does anyone have experience using limiter pedals?  Thank you!

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Mo'Joe
« on: August 06, 2009, 05:32:52 AM »
If the PAF Pro needed more harmonics and the Fred just didn't sound big enough for you then the Mo'Joe may be right up your alley!  Named after the man who commissioned its design, Joe Satriani wanted a pickup in the voice of the Fred but run hotter and let's just say that for a middle class pickup the Mo'Joe runs HOT!  It can easily drive pretty much any tube amplifier I played it through excluding my 70s Super Reverb and based on fundamental knowledge of Joe Satriani it was designed with rhythm playing in mind.   Generally Satch while performing live will play the rhythm parts and the melody/refrain on the bridge pickup while switching to his neck pickup for fancier things so this pickup was just born to be muscled around.  The notes you play are exposed entirely as what they are with little smoothness about the distortion in  a lot of cases which to me has phenomenal places..  Think a modern version of Dean DeLeo's later distorted guitar tones.  I've seen this pickup described as "growly" compared to the "searing" tone of the Freed.  This pup doesnt growl, it snarls.  Liken it to the vocal stylings of Megedeth's Dave Mustaine: loud, rude and probably never learned the meaning of the word Subtle.  If you handle this quality wrong it becomes nasal and sometimes damn near unusable and this can be softened by using it in Basswood like Joe does.  Personally I found it to be utterly pummeling in the bridge of a Mahogany Les Paul with harmonics for days and mids to cut through mixes easily.  To repeat:  I would not recommend this pickup for shred style leads or in situations where finesse and sustain are needed.  It's much more of a muscle the hell out of it for tight, ballsy playing pickup.

Would be examples of it in a Les Paul.  In the first clip I am playing all the guitars on there with the Mo'Joe in the bridge and in the video any given dirty riff is being played with the Mo'Joe... I'm in front of the camera so it makes things a bit easier to tell.

For examples of this in Basswood I would cite Super Colossal, Professor Satchafunkilus and the Chickenfoot CD as it is still Joe's current Bridge Pup

At least to me it seems pretty obvious when he switches between the pickups

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Humbucker From Hell

Okay, I've been on this forum a couple months now and in that time odds are I've been singing the praises for this pickup.

DiMarzio describes this pup as being glassey and combining the sound of a Strat and the power of a PAF and I'd be inclined to agree.  The HFH in the neck position does a very convincing job of producing strat neck tones in Les Pauls but with a somewhat bigger, thicker sound while retaining a clean, bright tone with the highs slightly rolled that I've been able to use for anything between Blues Rock and Jazz.  Dirty up the HFH and you have a smooth but still defined lead tone perfect for sustaining two hand tapping and legato work especially with the tone rolled down to taste.

My experience using the HFH with a Mo'Joe and Norton in the bridge has also made me quite fond of the middle configuration's tone which in both cases has been configured to be more in favor of the HFH to produce a very nice tone that I can only liken to guitarists like Jimmy Page (think like the first solo from The Ocean or Black Dog) and Mick Ronson (like the clean electric guitar in Space Oddity) or perhaps early Gin Blossoms because played clean it is chimey but still lush and dirty it is nasty and pronounced.

The pickup also handles effects well as I will attest to in this somewhat okay video footage of my band performing live with most of the playing and all of the guitar soloing being done through the HFH using distortion, chorus, delay and boost as fit.
I plan on posting actual sound clips in a few days once I get a real microphone if not before that. :madness:
