Honestly, swap both the volume and tone pots to 500k ohm ones. It's just not the pickups. The electronics with things such as pots may do the trick for you

For me, I generally use 500k ohm pots for humbuckers. I do however insist on the 250k ohm pots for the JB/Jazz set

I have left a Les Paul sitting with empty pickup cavities for a couple of weeks because I want to know more about these before I buy something else. I wish they would hurry up with the specs on them. I was about to buy a Set of Gibson Burstbucker 1&2. I have always liked Seymour Duncan's take on the 59 PAF, but with those, the neck pickup can be a bit bass heavy, and the bridge can be a bit brittle on high notes. They work better in an SG than a Les Paul.

IMO, if you enjoy very polite sounding humbuckers for the lack of better words, Burstbucker 1 & 2 combo on a guitar works well. I need to try a Burstbucker 2 & 3 combo someday. Also, these pickups are not wax potted. Something you may want to consider

I had the same problem with Evolution neck and added a capacitor in series. Now it is perfect!
Cheap and simple fix.

Oh yeah. That definitely might work too. Never knew why I never thought of this at the time of commenting. To be honest though, I never thought the Evolution neck was every boomy. But I guess we all hear things differently, and maybe even using the same pickup on different guitars may yield different results.

IMO, sometimes what people call "boomy", that could be tweaked by the pickups and electronics, or even changing the saddles and/or bridge assembly to a different material or to a better quality one

What I did to some neck humbuckers to de-muddy them was to remove either the screws under the 6th and 5th strings on the neck side coil or to remove the screws under the bass strings from the neck side coil. This has worked well for several pickups. However, if the pickup is covered I found the effect to be minimal and not enough.

This is a trick that was posted here by RayBarbeeMusic before.

Good luck,
Stephan

Depends on the humbucker itself. Sometimes you then have a severe imbalance of volume across the strings. In most cases IME, it's better to just remove all the screws instead

The Humbucker from Hell might just do the trick. Definitely has a clear and articulate low end, even high up the fretboard. However, it does sound a tad more single coil like. If you want a more humbucker type tone, you could always try PAF Joe, or maybe if you don't mind a low output humbucker, try the Air Classic neck. Never tried the PAF Master neck. Maybe that might work too

Maybe try the Injectors?

So many great bridge pickups from Dimarzio. But my all time favourite would be the Tone Zone

The Satch Track is anyway a typical humbucker. If you prefer a single-coil sound the Injector or Fast Track 1 are better choices.

You can always wire the Satch Track to run in parallel too  8)

So, after quickly shooting the DiMarzio tech department a message (kudos to them on the speedy reply!), they suggested a set of dual Transitions, saying the AT-1 might be a bit too organic and smooth for this, and the extra power and clarity would be nice to have?

I don't even know anymore, it seems like instead of narrowing it down, it just keeps getting harder hah. Guess that's part of the process eh?

AT-1 is a great pickup, especially for brighter sounding guitars.

Of the pickups you mentioned for the neck position I played the Air Norton, which is quite dark, and various PAF types (even though not the 36th Anniversary) which were too dark for my taste as well. Currently I use a Bluesbucker together with the AT-1 which works quite well and splits well.

Cheers Stephan

yeah, I was expecting to really like the sound of the Air Norton, but the bits I've heard on Youtube sounded very hit or miss. The Bluesbucker is an interesting suggestion though, definitely something I didn't consider before but will look at this further!

AT-1 in bridge, air Norton neck.

The problem I have with the Air Norton is that half the clips on youtube sound fine (for youtube videos, anyway), and others sound very ... idk, fuzzy?

Air Classic is what came to mind first, especially since you mentioned Paul Gilbert. For most of his Silence Followed album he used dual Air Classics. I think it is the most versatile neck humbucker Dimarzio makes, and it isn't just a jack of all trades, but a master of pretty much everything. Output-wise it will be a perfect match for the AT-1.

Bluesbucker would also be a great choice. Very versatile, one of my favorites.

I'm not a fan of the Air Norton in the neck. It's a more nasal, smoother, modern sound than I like. I like the rounder bell tone with a bright edge. Air Norton doesn't really do that.

The Air classic is definitely one I've missed! Silence had some really good tones too. tbh I was expecting to narrow the choice down but so far for every pickup that leaves the selection, a new one joins the fray haha.

The 36th anniversary PAF neck would be good too. In fact, I plan to install a AT-1/36th anniversary PAF neck combo when I do get the guitar I'm aiming for

That sounds interesting o: just out of curiosity, what guitar is it that you're gunning for?

Not this one in particular, but the same model and colour

Heavy Blues 2 and Virtual Vintage Pro 54 in middle and neck might work too

LOL! I used to have a HFH/FRED combo that came in a used guitar. The FRED had this upper end harmonic that stuck out all the time. Got anooying after a while, so I tried the Mo' Joe. Prefer it as now I have a slightly smoother top end, and a bit more low mid punch. Greatest improvement is when you play rhythm IMO

I'm a little confused. Isn't the 36th anniversary PAF set based on Larry's late 50s Les Paul too? Are we referring to the same or different guitar in this case?
