The Pickup Place / Triple D equivalent?
« on: October 27, 2019, 03:02:56 AM »

On the bridge it sound close enough my tonezone, I'm curious about the neck position. Maybe the breed neck?

Jump to 8.20 if you don't want to watch the whole thing but the comparison helps.

From the video, the dreamcatcher PU reminded me of my tonezone when tilting the screw poles to the strings.

Never really jelled with any petrucci signature PU's, actually quite good on a mesa but with other amps often a fat or dullness I dislike.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: The Air Norton

Went to a guitar store recently to try out some ibby's for a friend, I kept asking myself why doesn't my (20 something year old) AN sound like these newer stuff.

Long story short, my AN came with the unpolished side facing the PU and when flipped to the polished side the sound was there. I hear on my guitar the high E strings highs are more rounded and towards the low-E it really brightens up, a bit of a problem with OD pedals since they cut the low-end...

So its tilted a bit more than usual toward the low-e to get enough bass. Adjusting PU height from a DI input of soundcard is likely unconventional but a very detailed way to sort these problems.

So the moral of this long post:
If you have a Tone Zone you like but sometimes feel overwhelmed by it, try the half air mod with the magnet touching only the screws. Opens up the Tone Zone and improves the dynamics. It's not night and day - the tone is still "Tone Zone" and the change is subtle - but just enough to be worth doing it.

Personally never liked that mod. with TZ, but did like it with AN.

For those who want to try this, first try rising the screw poles noticeable. If the PU is direct mounted an angle also can be gives (screws closer to the strings, my ibanez at the time was sold like that).

The Pickup Place / Re: HB cover question

There's actually a picture in the link giving dimensions but not the E-to-e distance. I think its an F-hole spacing but I also read each brand PU has a slight difference in width so I'm looking for dimarzio to be sure.

Curious, why avoid brass?

The Pickup Place / HB cover question

Want to buy covers for my F-spaced dimarzio's (AN-TZ). I could order dimarzio brand but there is an asian brand I can get locally.

I couldn't find the need dimarzio spacing details to make sure it will fit well. Providing that info or if anyone could check dimensions from this link; https://www.solomusicankara.com/sic-pc1752bk-humbucker-metal-manyetik-kapagi-siyah would be very helpful.

A guitarist named mrs. smith (amazing player with funny concept) uses there and gets great vai tones out of a digital-tiny vox amp boosted with a ds1.

Led me to believe this PU really shines when boosted with a dist. pedal (the ds1 cuts lots of low end too, usually modified to change that), then doesn't become overly fat but cutting yet still full sounding compared to a pafpro.

You'll probably want to check liquifire or newer petrucci PU's.

Petrucci used the AN upsidedown or a modded version of it and my guess is as you mention, the attack. I'd like to think although not the same character (even if the eq spec.s seem similar) probably the later releaced ones solved such problem.

Last night I also converted an air-norton to a norton to test it in the neck position.

The basic eq is like placing the air-norton extremely close to the strings without dynamics poping. Tighter on the high strings but loser on the low, some change with the screw-pole hights do help. Also, its extremely sensitive to positioning. The pickup must slant to the body a bit to get a reasonable neck character, height adjustment isn't enough.

The tonezone didn't keep up with it. Its not the output but the mid.s, it can be solved by flipping the magnets non-cast side on the tonezone to match the tightness and mids. I still have to experiment with height a bit more but I'm positive then it will work.

This mod. is only for those who play with a lot of gain (shred), don't expect it to sound (actually, react to dynamics) as nice with bluesy overdrive. Looking at the dimarzio site, after this mod. the Breed set got more of my attention before to get a middle-ground between this mod. and standard (alnico with high-out without over the top...).

Update; yeah it worked, I also decreased the norton a bit more than I'd normally do with lower-output pickups and got it to a territory where it can be named "versatile" on the neck position. As dimarzio site says its usable on the neck, but consider something higher-output than the tonezone if you don't want to deal with modifying.

The Pickup Place / Dual resonance, more noise?
« on: October 18, 2017, 04:50:59 AM »
Just curious if dual resonance PU's are more noisey than traditional designs or not.

In case to be specific, I play close to the computer in my home studio setup (with vai-ish high-gain). Its not too bad, but I have 3-4 PU's in mind and thought less noise would be a factor for me in choosing one.

The Pickup Place / Is This accurate? (AN, PP sound samples)

Digging some web info to find what I want to change my air norton (neck) with. Like many I also look for something brighter, paf pro is mentioned a lot but I'm not hearing it in these sound samples;

Air Norton;

Try this too if on the neck (shreddy as hell);

magnet touching screws
metal bar on poles (or a guitar string)
a slight air gap between the magnet and the metal bar

I used the same spacer from the TZ and inserted it to the bolt side of an Air Norton and the magnet touches the screw poles. Been using the guitar like this for a few years now, the split on the air norton is very strat like.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: ISCV2 Evolution Middle
« on: March 17, 2016, 05:38:09 PM »
On apex guitars, the blaze middle is used on the neck. From video's it sounds like a wider spectrum tele which is cool...anyone tried the ISCV2 on neck? I wonder if the noise would be too much when wanting to shred.
