The Pickup Place / Re: early DP100 super distortion

That person is totally wrong. It’s 6,500 turns of 44AWG poly wire. DiMarzio doesn’t use Formvar wire.

A standard PAF style pickup is 5,000 turns of 42.

The Pickup Place / Re: One coil with more winds?

No, they wind some pickups with two different wire gauges. They are about the same number of turns on each coil. They use thinner wire on the North coil. Thinner wire reads higher resistance.

I was going through this with my Parker P-38. First I rewired my switch so instead of the middle pickup I got neck and bridge.

But then I eventually removed the 5 way and installed three toggle switches, one for each pickup.

Any one of their PAF type pickups should be pretty similar.

Hi DarthPhineas,

In regards to DiMarzio single coils, why doesn’t DiMarzio use eyelets in their bobbins, like Fender and Duncan.  They wire the lead wires inside  the coil like a humbucker.  It seems the eyelets would be more durable and easier to repair the leads.  I’m not sure what DiMarzio does to reinforce the lead wires in the coil.  I’ve never pulled off the tape on the FS1.  Maybe you can discuss this further.  TY!!!

They do on the vintage style pickups.

The modern style pickups have plastic bobbins.

The Pickup Place / Re: Pickup tone vs hearing tone
« on: November 06, 2019, 12:44:45 PM »
I think it’s also your perception. When I first heard a music CD I thought it sounded too bright. That’s because I was used to the soft top end of vinyl. But then I got used to it and it sounds right to me.

I hear a lot of guitarists that don’t use much treble. And you can’t really hear what they are playing in a band context. But it hinds sloppy playing well. lol.

As we get better you learn how to get the tone from the way you play. Then you gravitate to brighter guitar tones.

I like bright humbuckers. Kind of like big single coils.

They aren’t a huge operation. I worked there for a short while. They do make a lot of pickups every day. They make a lot of pickups for Ibanez and Ernie Ball. Pretty much all their OEM pickups.

The thing that impressed me most was how many custom pole pieces and magnets they use. It makes Duncan pickups seem very generic (not that they aren’t also good)

I’m guessing that they dropped models that didn’t sell well.

They will make custom orders if you want something they don’t currently make. They still know how and have all the parts.

I don’t know who Gabby is, but Larry’s daughter is the CEO. I never met Larry or Steve when I was there.

DiMarzio can make anything you need. When I worked there I was working on pickups for Ibanez, Ernie Ball, and just regular people that wanted something custom, usually bobbin color or polarity.
It’s actually a fairly small company.

The Pickup Place / Re: Where to find 51.5mm spacer?

That should work. DiMarzio uses metal shims on a few pickups. You can use key way stock for shims

They sell 50mm keepers here. I’ve never seen a 51 or 52mm keeper.

You wired it wrong.

Red is hot, green is ground. Black and white connect together.

The Pickup Place / Re: PAF DP103 50th Anniversary
« on: August 24, 2019, 07:25:30 PM »
Their original PAF was a fairly standard design humbucker.  Everyone and their mother makes one of those. Duncan makes several. It was a nice sounding pickup.

When they first came out back in the 70s, the guitarist in my band gave me a set of patent label pickups out of his ‘59 Les Paul (used to be a gold top with P-90s) and had me install the DiMarzios. They sounded better than the Gibson pickups.

The Anniversary pickups use the air gap to simulate an Alnico II magnet. They also have the iron slugs between the poles to increase the inductance. As you probably know, these were tuned to sound like Larry’s personal Les Paul.

Maybe the original model didn’t sell all that well?

To my ears the Duncan Alnico II Pros are very similar sounding pickups.

The Pickup Place / Re: Cap for ash guitar?
« on: July 19, 2019, 03:09:36 AM »
Keep in mind that the cap only comes into play when the tone control is turned down. Otherwise it’s the resistance of the pot affecting the tone.

What type of tone do you want with the control turned down? If you want mud use a larger value like .047uF. If you just want to remove the top end while leaving the mids intact then use something like .01uF.

Also the hotter the pickups the greater the resonance in the circuit.

Just try some caps out. There’s no right or wrong formula.

Fiberglass will have zero effect on the tone.

Copper is more conductive than nickel silver (white brass) so depending on how think it is can dull the tone.

I use fiberboard baseplates with thin copper foil for shielding. I don’t notice any difference.

By the way, I don’t hear any difference in your clips.

The Pickup Place / Re: Wax Potting vs Lacquer Potting....
« on: July 11, 2019, 06:49:41 PM »
I was hoping you would respond here. You know soooo much more about this than I do.  I’m still learning how all of this works.
I did discover that somehow I lost the spacer in my pickup when I was mag swapping. I searched for it but just can’t find it. There’s a better than probable chance that, that is causing my squealing. I ordered a couple which arrived today and this weekend I’ll install it and pot the pickup and see how it goes.
I bought a small crock pot and 2 lbs of paraffin, which I have already melted. I’m going to make a jig to hold the pickup submerged in the wax!

Ok, you took the pickup apart and lost the spacer. So the parts are not secure.

So you need to get something in there so no part of the pickup can move. A little wiggle translates to a lot of squealing.

You can buy the spacers on line.
