The Pickup Place / Re: PAF Master Pickup Height
« on: June 11, 2016, 08:36:57 AM »
Starting Spec is always a good idea.  But don't lose your mind about spec.

At the end of the day, pickup height, pole height, and the guitar/amp tone all get involved.  It's by your ears in the end.  No two pups are gonna sound the same.

I will say too close to the strings is a tone killer.  Sucks the sustain right out.  And for hotter pups, sometimes a little lower is actually better! (Just a little…)

I'm pretty sure if you install it so the wire exits the pup to the controls, on the same side as the hole to the cavity (to the right, if you are looking at the face of the guitar).

And if that doesn't work - just flip it.

Too busy / lazy to install personally.  Have three projects running.  I'll be dropping it at the shop when I pick up an acoustic.  Whenever that is.

I'm reliving the crap out of the guitar at the moment.

Let's just imagine it is a) Painted Neon Green b) has one hum bucker and one vol c) the pickup will be pink regardless….

That would be similar to a Jazz C5 combo.  Kinda cool modern sound.

MAn  - I've only been playing SuperD's for a decade….maybe a TOneZone here or there….

But The FAst Track / Hot Rails (classic SD v DMZ) is in full play.

What I REALLY want is a guitar that has a killer single tone.  FT2 will do that split.  But I want it to be able step up and do the metal if I WANT.  THINK "ROCK ME" by Great white with one guitar.

The Super D is thick, middy, and has more highs than you would think.  Honestly, a great all around pickup.  You can turn it down if you need to (Do a 50's wiring mod to retain highs).

The Ceramic makes it more 'tight' than shallow.  Do not confuse "k" rating for how hot it is.  I'd say a SuperD is notably hotter than a 498.

Regular old PAF in the neck will do fine, unless you have one of those dark/muddy LP's.  Then go with that PAF Pro

So when it final came down to it….I had to go with the Fast Track 2:

To go in one of these:

I was just feeling the DiMarzio in here….I expect I'll play it split most of the time for single tone.  But I may want to get my 80's metal on!

Going to remove a tone, add a mini switch to split, go master vol and tone, and relic the bejeebus out of it!

I have to second the PAF Pro as a pup swap option.

That said - before we go all solder crazy…how is the pickup adjusted?  height/poles etc….

Good tone is good tone.

If it feels good, and sounds good, it IS good.

The Pickup Place / Re: EJ custom bridge in neck position(?)
« on: March 17, 2016, 05:47:29 PM »
The question wasn't really about putting a bridge pickup in the neck position but how would it fit with an AT-1 in the bridge. Also, since I'm not from the US I can't use the 30 day change policy so I have to be sure to buy what's best for me

oh - no idea?!?!?!?!  I don't do the AT-1 !!!!!

Nothing wrong with high gain amp, high output pups -

Just remember to use the gain appropriately!  Meaning lightly….

But yeah - if you want to let the preamp tubes run wild, no need for a high gain pup.  A DiMarzio PAF and turning up the preamp should sound awesome., and a lot like a Custom, but somewhat more organic and a touch warmer.  Unless you want the cool steely tones of a ceramic magnet.

73
What amp and fx?

What tuning?

74
Oh yeah - these days, with the gobbs of gain on tap with most any amp, I think lower output generally (not always) gives better articulation/tone etc….unless you need a certain amount of compression and a particular eq curve coming off the guitar.

Cool post.  I've used a bunch of DMZ's over the years.

X2N was one of my favorites, and I'll own one again sometime.  Very even EQ - but I wouldn't say it let the quality/tone of the guitar through?!?!?!?!?!?  A prime piece of Korina or a two by four would all sound the same IMO.  That said - I did the Series/Parallel/split wiring as suggested; BAD@$$!!!!!  Go from meltdown to clean, and a kind of Texas hot start with a switch.

I loved slamming that into my Pro Jr. and pimp slapping the tubes into next week!

Tone Zone and Super D….I like the Tone Zone a lot.  But always keep coming back to the SuperD.  Just hot enough with just enough highs, more open.  Just a great classic sound.

Cool post!
