The Pickup Place / Re: Looking for a bridge pickup

Yeah, sounds like you want a Steve's Special. You might want to check out the Crunch Lab too.

The Pickup Place / Re: MORE color options for DiMarzio 7-string models
« on: March 05, 2022, 11:12:28 PM »
I didn't have any problem finding a green set a couple of years ago. I have seen a red set and blue set for sale used on Ebay fairly recently. I'd say the majority of 7 and 8 string players are playing metal on black guitars, and don't want different colors. There aren't many 7 or 8 string guitars in colors other than black either. I wish Ibanez would offer the RG752 with a hardtail in some brighter colors. I bought one of the yellow ones with a trem a couple of years ago, but there was something about that trem on a 7 string I did not like, so I sold it.

The Pickup Place / Re: Crunch Lab / Liquifire on the way!

In the PRS Singlecut, the Norton Bridge gives me great Les Paul inspired tones with a little extra push without going over the top like a Super Distortion. It is not muddy. It is not too flabby on the low end or too bright on the top end. It is perfectly balanced in the Singlecut, and get pinch harmonics super easy. the Liquifire neck meshes with it well while giving you a very different neck and bridge tone. It gets that bubbly Les Paul neck sound but also holds together very well when you throw a lot of gain at it. I usually don't care for the in-between position, but I like it with this combo.

I have that set in a PRS SE Singlecut. Great combo.

The Pickup Place / Re: Air Zone vs Super Distortion?
« on: December 03, 2021, 08:05:37 PM »
The Super Distortion does not fell like a "Stiff Ceramic" pickup to me. The Seymour Duncan Distortion and Custom have that stiff feel to them but not the Dimarzio Super Distortion. The SD has more mids to my ears than the Air Zone does, although the Air Zone is not scooped by any means. The both have ample bass, but the Air Zone's bass seems a tad tighter. The Air Zone has amazing sustain, and the SD has great crunch. If the SD is "hairy", the Air Zone has more of a "neatly shaved" tone.

Guitar Lounge / Re: Appreciation for Fret Work

I have worked on a couple of older acoustic guitars that student were trying to use that had rising tongue so bad, I just pulled several frets past the body joint and replaced them with plastic spacers to keep the wood from moving.

Dimarzio Cruiser Bridge in the middle position. Great stratty tones with less string pull, and it keeps up with humbuckers better than most traditional singles.

I know this will sound weird, but it works. Seymour Duncan Invader Bridge, and 59 Neck. They mesh pretty well, and you would have heavy tones from the bridge and wonderful cleans from the neck.

For something more modern, the Dimarzio Norton bridge and Liquifire neck.

The Air Norton neck is already a muddy mess at standard tuning. It would not be my choice for drop tuning.

The Pickup Place / Re: H-S-H combination suggestion

I have experimented around a lot with HSH combos in my Ibanez RG. I like an Air Zone bridge, Virtual Vintage 54 Pro middle, and PAF Joe Neck. The Paf Pro also works well here, but I like the way the PAF Joe tightens up the bass end a little. The Air Zone bridge has the fatter bridge tone you are describing, and has amazing sustain.
I also like the Fred Bridge, Cruiser middle (I use the cruiser bridge model for the middle position, because it keeps up with the humbuckers better) and PAF Joe neck. I kinda like the Humbucker from Hell neck with this combo, but always end up thinking it needs just a little more output. The Norton Bridge works in this combo too, but not in a basswood body. Only in Mahogany, or Mahogany/Maple.

That might work. The PAF Pro is probably pretty close to the 36th Bridge in output.

The Paf Pro is a little muddy and bloated in a Les Paul Neck in my opinion. Low notes can get really mushy. If I were after the tones you described, I would go for the 36th Anniversary Neck. I would also throw in a 36th Bridge to round off the package....

If I was dead set on using the Paf Pro in the neck, I would probably go for a Super Distortion in the bridge.

The Pickup Place / Re: New HSH setup OK?

Sounds to me like it is wired up wrong. Have you checked to see which pickup is active in each switch position? Plug into an amp and flip to each switch position one at a time and tap on each pickup's polepieces with something metal to make sure that the pickup that is supposed to be on in that position is working, and that the ones that are not supposed to be are NOT active.
Yes, the true velvet should have a detectable drop in output compared to the 2 humbuckers.

The Dimarzio PAF 59 is not going to help with your brightness problem. I would think that the Air Zone was a really good choice.

The Pickup Place / Re: Neck pickup to pair with Super Distortion
« on: August 14, 2021, 10:24:31 PM »
The Super 2 matches the Super D really well, but it is so similar that I felt like I just had an extended range of one pickup tone instead of a distinct neck and bridge tone. The PAF Pro is a classic pairing with the the Super D. I thought it matched well, provided a wider range of tones, and kept up with the Super D output-wise. I would bet the 36th Anniversary would pair well, and would give more vintage neck tones, but I've never had them together in the same guitar. I don't know if the Air Classic could keep up with the Super D's output.

I bet the entire 36th set would sound good in that setup. If you want a neck that never gets muddy, the humbucker from hell will do that. I don't know about splitting any of those since they are all pretty low output to begin with.
