Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: FRED

Love the FRED in the bridge with a 250k volume pot - clear but not sharp highs, full mids, nice harmonics, a lot of fun to play.

I like it on warmer guitars. But on brighter guitars, i don't prefer.

I guess I mentioned before but I strongly prefer a 250k volume pot or lower for 67, 58 and 61 (and Virtual Vintage 54 Pro), regardless of the position. Same goes for any of the higher output models (Injectors, Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 and Virtual Solo) in the bridge position. For the Injector neck in the neck position, I prefer a 500k volume pot.

What I did not mention previously is that all of the Area models are sensitive to the tone control loading. If you have a 250k tone pot and want more brightness, try a 500k. Want still more? Try a 1meg or a no-load pot.

Cheers Stephan

The Pickup Place / DiMarzio Transition A4

After trying the Transition bridge in two different guitars - a PRS Custom 24 and a Peavey Wolfgang - I decided I wanted a little less brightness and a slightly softer attack. The pickups sounds good out of the box but it’s just a little too hot in the high end. It sounds to me like a lower wound Super Distortion but with a little more mids and highs. It has that cool whomp thing that the Super Distortion has but I wanted to cool off the highs. I had some magnets around and decided to try a rough cast A4 and long story short, it did exactly what I wanted. It rounded off the highs and softened up the attack just a little and it still has that characteristic sound and feel, and still comes in around 11k. The stock pickup has a tall ceramic magnet and spacers which I had to remove, so you will have to take off the baseplate to do the mod, but it all went back together with no issues and I am glad I finally broke down and tried it. Btw the 36th neck with Transition bridge is great in the Wolfgang, much more versatile than the stock pickups.

You’re welcome. I am really liking these. They are just really nice A2 “PAF” style pickups. Clear and sweet just the right amount of growl when needed.

- Something bright that saturates a Bray-modded Marshall SLP

- Tone Zone and PAF Pro sound muddy and dull

There really isn’t much to go on here.

My initial thoughts based on the typical use case of that amp are a Duncan TB-4 JB in the bridge and a Duncan SH-12 Screamin’ Demon in the neck. You could go with the TB-12 but the SH-12 will be just a tad brighter. For additional saturation I would consider a good overdrive.

That out of the way I’ll take a stab at some DiMarzios. The Super Distortion in the bridge seems like an obvious choice, perhaps with a Super 2 in the neck. The Evolution set is another safe bet if you have the chops.

The HFH is bright but it is also very clean. If the PAF Pro doesn’t provide enough saturation then the HFH will not be a good choice.

You might look into using a tubescreamer-style pedal as a booster, as that would remedy the "little muddy,no saturation, and a little dull" problem nicely. TZ and PAF Pro are a great combo already, I don't know if you can get what you want out of a modded Marshall just by changing pickups.
