The Pickup Place / Re: CLEAN & CHORDS: Tone Zone or Norton?
« on: September 10, 2017, 04:56:19 AM »
I think being able to play certain chords and having it sound clean and clear har more to do with the amp and/or the pedals.

But the Steves Special is a good suggestion for chordplaying since its not congested (ie lacks) in the mids. However thats all it's good for IMO. Hate it for leadplaying but then I'm a midrange junkie.

I'd agree that honky is a very good word to describe the Norton. It didn't work for me either but of course, so much of the tone is in the wood of the guitar, the amp, the cab etc.

I second Greenlions suggestion of the AZ. I'm the biggest TZ fan and I feel it can do pretty much anything but in this case AZ or possibly a Breed Neck would be what I'd choose.

I've never tried the SD-s so my vote goes to the Chopper. One of the best neck pickups out there.

Getting convincing Maiden and Periphery tones from the same pickup is a tall order. Those two sounds are too different from each other imo. Add to that beautiful cleans and it gets even tougher.

The Pickup Place / Re: Dimarzio Injector - also for vintage sounds
« on: September 02, 2017, 02:46:12 AM »
I keep thinking about trying the injectors, but Paul's tone always sounds so harsh to me. Every demo I have seen him do with those sounds brash and harsh.
Maybe it has something to do with his hearing loss. Maybe he dials in more treble in his tone than you like. I had the Injector Neck and didn't find it harsh. That said, I don't think it sounds like a vintage pickup at all. Ymmv.

Yes, the Super 2 sounds absolutely KILLER in the neck of an LP.

The Pickup Place / Re: Wiring suggestions for Jaguar pickup replacement
« on: August 26, 2017, 06:07:13 AM »
I'm going to just wire it straight up ground and hot, nothing fancy. I was just wondering with the spread out wiring system of a Jaguar, if there was anything to look out for.
For this kind of wiring, is the standard Dimarzio 4 wire system apply ( I know the Steve Morse is 4 wire and pretty sure the Super 2 is also) Can I ask, which wires are soldered together again ( its been awhile and i dont have the original inserts for the pickups)  If I remember right bare and green to ground, red to hot and white and black soldered together and taped off?
Yes.

For my taste the X2N is too over the top, too much output. I know Romeo uses it and gets a good tone with it but for me, nah. DAct-X I never tried but the regular D-Act is a great pickup and capable of a lot more than metal. Well balanced but not without personality. Fantastic chug but never brittle on the higher strings.
I know some people doesn't like a higher-output pickup in the neck but I dig it. I mostly solo on that so I don't mind the extra ooompfh there.

Otherwise the regular Super D is a given choice. It's THAT sound only not as dark as the Super 3 (which isn't really dark either).

I'd be interested in learning more about when the Blucher era started to wind down.

Has Steve left DiMarzio?

The Pickup Place / Re: Neck pickup for a PAF pro bridge?

The EJ Custom would work too but it's a very special, stringy sound. Like a HFH but even more tweaked. There are a great video of it somewhere, check it out first.

Anybody tried this? I'm a huge fan of the S2, its my favorite neck pu for shreddy stuff and Im thinking the Evo 2 could be an epic match in the bridge. Granted, it has (on paper) a bit less output but that shouldn't be anything that couldn't be fixed by adjusting pu height.

I've got the SD/S2 combo in one guitar and Super 3/S2 in another so I've got those two obvious combinations covered. Just looking for something more modern and mid-focused in the bridge. The Evo 2 seems like it could fit the bill perfectly.

I have a paf pro in the neck with an Evo 2 in the bridge in my jazzblaster and it sounds great!

Cool! Yeah, I dig the PAF Pro too. I have it paired with a Tone Zone and thats one of my absolute favorite combos. The S2 is just a step up from the PP when it comes to brightness and output so on paper it should RAWK.

I've actually heard your stuff before, and loved it! I knew you used the Super 3 for those recordings, but I didn't know you used the super 2 as well.
Ah, cool!
Yeah, I've used the S2 a lot. I still have it in one guitar for when I want that early Gilbert shred tone.
