Title: Bridge pickup to go with Paf Pro in neck?
Post by: mildew on November 10, 2019, 04:02:42 AM
I have an EBMM Majesty that i have modded to normal passive operation.  I recently swapped out the stock Illuminators for a Dimarzio Paf Pro in the neck and a Suhr SSV in the bridge.

They both sound great, but the Paf Pro has a special something that the SSV lacks, so i might try another Dimarzio brand pickup instead.

What bridge pickup would be a good match for a Paf Pro neck?

Music style is dad rock - blues, 70's rock, reggae, Slash or Santana tone is about as heavy as i go gain wise.

Wire a PAF Pro to bridge and see how you would like it there. ;)
I would go with double PAF Pro. ;)
Or something in like Satriani range ... Like Mo Joe ....
I would go with something bright and not overpowered.
But just for a test, try PAF Pro on bridge. ;) If you like it, make it double.
And if you won't like it, then Fred and Mo Joe won't be any better. ;)

If your Majesty is Basswood or Mahogany - PAF Pro would be okey.
But on Alder ... not for me. For Alder something darker.

But wire a PAF Pro on bridge and see how you like it.
Steve Vais first guitars were dual PAF Pro on Basswood. Brad Delson also has dual PAF Pro on Mahogany Ibanez .. it's not waste of time this tiny test. Especially if it's non-Alder guitar. ;)

But on Alder would be too bright, but on Basswood and Mahogany  it would be super okey. ;)

That pickup is like insanely versatily. Can do neck, can do bridge, can do clean, can do dirty, can do pretty much everything. It's something like Norton, insanely versatile.

If you wire it on bridge, and like it - you have bridge pickup then.
And if you end up not liking it, you can describe things which you don't like so we search further.
And best part - it's win win situation.
You won't buy pickup on blind, you won't spend money, and we will have good feedback from that test.
It only costs time and good will. ;)
Just for a test, I would try it. ;)

Btw if it's Alder guitar, then no. But if it's Mahogany or Basswood, it's worth it. ;)

I swapped out the pickups in one of my Majesties. I had Dimarzio custom make PCB base plates so that I could just plug them in where the Illuminators went without having to alter any of the stock electronics. I have a PAF Pro in the neck position and a Breed Neck in the bridge position. The Breed Neck sounds great -- like a PAF Pro, but a bit warmer.

Tone Zone, or Air Zone, or Fred.
