Identifying a 1987? RG 550 road flare red
« on: August 20, 2018, 01:26:47 AM »
I could use some help and expert opinions regarding my Ibanez RG 550. The guy I got it from assured me that it was an all original 1987 but after posting it for sale recently I've gotten feedback suggesting that the neck is not original to that body and the pickups may not be original either.
The guitar is obviously road flare red but the head stock is black rather than red to match the body. However the serial number on the back of the headstock is a silver sticker with black writing which according to what I've found so far was only done in 1987. And the serial number #F766917 would make it late 87 or early 88. The pickups have white stenciled V1, S1, V2 on the face.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
  Thanks

I've seen RG550 RFR's with black headstocks before. Not all of them had matching headstocks as I do believe at a certain point, they just had a bunch of necks and bodies made and put together. There were some that had the Ibanez USA or made in usa neck plate that were pretty much assembled in the US from various necks and bodies that were shipped over from Japan. If I recall, all the headstocks were black 'cause it could be fitted on any body they had.

The pickups would be correct for that model. They weren't that great though.

I appreciate your help and information on the RG550. Was it a common practice for Ibanez to put miss becks on the bodies? Is there any way I can prove it? Some one called me out on Reverb saying that I wasn't an 87 because of the previous mentioned issues so I had to significantly lower my asking price since I can't prove it.  I'm at the point if just keeping it because it is an awesome guitar and looks pretty cool with the RFR paint lol.
   Thanks. Brent
