Recommend me a single coil sized humbucker for my strat please?
« on: January 03, 2017, 01:04:02 AM »
I have a Fender 40th year anniversary SSS Stratocaster that has Duncan SSL-1s' in the neck and middle position. Had the single coil bridge pickup swopped out to a Kent Armstrong STCR-1 single coiled sized humbucker which I feel has too much output and am thus looking for an alternative single coil sized humbucker that:

- Does not require modifications to my pick-guard and is single coil sized
- Ability to coil split
- Has low output (I play mostly in church so I do not use much gain)
- Has a fat warm tone
- Will blend well with the Duncan SSL-1

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

If it is low output, splitting the coil isn't going to get you anything useful. That is the entire point of higher output bridge pickups. When you split the higher output in half, you still have something in the range of a vintage single coil, so you have the best of both worlds. Duncan has several stacked single coil offering.

Warm and fat bridge SC? Heavy Blues 2.
Also make sure you have a tone knob dedicated to the bridge pickup, that´ll help.

I'm confused as to why you would want a humcancelling single coil in the bridge when the SSL-1s aren't  ???

Anyway, the Dimarzio Heavy Blues 2 or if you really want low output, or the HS3 might do the trick

I would consider the Chopper. I have one strat with the Chopper in the bridge, Area 58 in the middle and Area 67 in the neck. The Chopper agrees with these two in that it does not overpower them or makes you feel that you are playing a different guitar when going from any other combination to bridge only.

I would also wire the guitar so that the bridge pickup gets a tone control.

Cheers Stephan

In the bridge of my guitar I put a BC-1 after the suggestion from Dimarzio and I like it very much. It's rather warm, with a lot of harmonics and split very well.
