DiMarzio (or other suggestion) for a Charvel Star mahogany body
« on: January 25, 2016, 05:04:13 PM »
Just picked up a Charvel DST Star guitar on closeout. Need suggestions for a bridge pickup for it. It a mahogany body, maple neck with rosewood board.  We play hard rock, classic rock, and classic metal. I use a Blades Reaper high gain amp. Thanks in advance

I think there's one pickup that own those styles and thats the Super Distortion. IF you're going for classic tones that is. You can also go with a PAF-style pickup like the 36th Anni or the PAF Master if you're leaning more on the 'rock' than 'metal' side of things. I'd go SD tho.

It was quite long ago when I had a chance to play a Star shaped guitar - actually it was a Charvel. It had a (probably non-original) Bill Lawrence L-500 (no idea which variant, though) in it and I remember it being loud, bright and aggressive. From that angle I believe that the Super Distortion may work well and put some fat in the overall tone.

Cheers Stephan

I agree. Super D and a Super 2 neck.

I have to second the Super D for the bridge but go with a PAF Pro in the neck

Imho the best bridge pup for your woods and for classic hard rock is Fred.
There is a reason DMZ have been making this pup for many years. It's very good, has also a lot of dynamics, and it cuts well in any dense mix, in view also of the slightly dark tones of your guitar body/fretboard wood.

The FRED is a cool pickup. Nice and open, but capable of shredding.
